486,066 babies are born prematurely in the US each year. Of these babies, 222,775 cases of severe gastrointestinal (GI) complications are seen annually. The deadliest of these conditions is necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) with a mortality rate of 30-50%. 90% of all cases occur in premature infants. While effective and non-surgical treatments exist for NEC, physicians currently lack the tools to get the early diagnosis newborns need to survive. Watchdog Medical is bridging this gap between disease onset and treatment. We have developed a non-invasive device to continuously monitor NEC-specific vitals and output a quantitative result to warn physicians of declining GI health before it is too late. An early warning will lead to an early diagnosis and prevent surgical intervention; which is proven to have a higher mortality rate. Watchdog Medical is saving the lives of newborns through non-invasive and continuous GI monitoring.
